Grinding your teeth in your sleep is a common issue. While it may not seem like a big deal, it is important to know what the long-term effects are on your teeth and what you can do about it.
On average, your top and bottom teeth are applying pressure to each other for only about 10 minutes a day. However, if you are grinding your teeth at night, it is normally a few HOURS where your teeth are applying pressure to each other.
Prolonged grinding can cause:
-Chips on the tops and sides of your teeth
-Loss of tooth enamel (the hard outer part of you teeth)
-Increased sensitivity as the enamel wears away
-Loss of vertical dimension which causes you to appear older (your chin and nose become closer together)
The bad news is once the enamel is lost, you cannot get it back. The good news is that using a nightguard will stop you from damaging your teeth at night.
